Do you want to know more about the Bible, Christian Tradition, and Church History? Are you hoping to understand how your personal experiences and beliefs bring you closer to God and God’s people? Or are you searching for an adult formation program with real substance to offer at your church?
If “yes,” EfM – Education for [Lay] Ministry – may be for you.
What is EfM? EfM is one of the Church’s strongest small-group adult formation programs. Developed 50 years ago by the Episcopal seminary at the University of the South (Sewanee), EfM invites groups around the world to journey together through scripture, church history, and practical theology.
How does it work? Through study, prayer, worship, and reflection, participants engage with Christian tradition and consider what it means for their own lives in a complex world. More than a Bible study, EfM creates space for learners to respond thoughtfully to faith, experience, and community.
Following Jesus is the theme for 2026-27. Each participant engages in one of five 36-session areas of study for the year:
- Old Testament
- New Testament (prerequisite: EfM Year 1)
- Christian History (prerequisite: EfM Years 1 & 2)
- Christian Ethics and Spirituality (prerequisite: EfM Years 1, 2, & 3)
- Wide Angle – an overview of the first four areas, and perfect for people who are new to main-line Christianity, who have little time for study, or who just want a review.
How the study areas work: The first four study areas are taken in sequence because each one builds on the last. Wide Angle may be taken at any time. Seminar groups often include participants from different study areas, which broadens perspectives, deepens discussion, and enriches shared insights.
EfM Immersion Experience: Join Diocesan EfM Coordinators Cathy Bailey and Mary Novello to sample a typical EfM meeting on Tuesday, July 28, or Saturday, August 1, from 9 to 11 AM. Participants will explore EfM’s Engage, Respond, and Reflect modules and will have time to ask questions about the program. Seating is limited.
