After their summer of free lessons with the professional organists of the Harrisburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, students from the 2026 class of the Shenk Scholarship Fund program will perform, many for the first time in public, on Sunday, August 23, at 4:00 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral, 221 N. Front Street, Harrisburg.
“This is our largest class of students in recent memory,” says chapter education chair Andrew Meade of Mechanicsburg. “It’s a testimony to the resurgence of interest in the organ by a new generation of musicians.”
Eligible students are provided with ten free half-hour lessons throughout the summer by members of the chapter on a variety of instruments in the region. Most have studied piano prior to acceptance in the program. Students may be of any age, and non-organ majors in colleges may apply.
In the recital students will play the 2025 Marshall & Ogletree Opus 19 digital organ of 175 ranks, the first of its type in the Harrisburg region. The recital will be followed by refreshments. Admission is free.
The Harrisburg Chapter was recently awarded the top American Guild of Organists’ Chapter Achievement Award (one of six in the U.S. and Europe) for its excellence and focus on the education of children and adults.
